Wing Commander was released in the late 80's. It was one of the first Space Flight Simulators in the computer game market. Followed was a series of six games and add-ons, a short series of novels, and more recently a movie.
In popular Wing Commander circles, the Movie isn't considered canon (because it's not). This has no bearing on the chat. We operated shortly between the number 3 and 4 Wing Commander Video games.
You don't need to know anything about the games or the movies or novels to participate in the chat. Most of the information needed is provided on the website, and on the chat message board.
The chat (Pilot's Lounge) is where the story is played out, by Role-Playing (RP-ing). Unlike other forms of role-play no dice are used. The RP focuses primarily on the events surrounding the crew on board the ship, and how they interact with each other.
The role-plays that take place occur on board a ship called the TCS Diligent. This is the primary location used.
To keep things continious and making sense, the site is designed to be IC (in character), hence why everything is about the ship and centered around the ship.
